How to connect your Bluetooth notebook to the internet by using the iPhone Bluetooth tethering function

1. Test Environment

  • PC/Notebook with Windows 7
  • TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack 7.10.10(T)
  • iPhone 3GS with Operating System Version 3.1.3

2. Configure Connection

  1. Turn on Bluetooth (iphone)

    • iPhone: Touch on [Settings]



    • iPhone: Touch [General]



    • iPhone: Touch [Bluetooth]



    • iPhone: Touch [OFF] to switch on Bluetooth.



    • iPhone: The Bluetooth icon appears on the top of the screen. It indicates that Bluetooth is on now. Bluetooth starts searching for devices.
      Touch the [General] button.



  2. Setup Tethering (iPhone)

    • iPhone: Touch [Network]



    • iPhone: Touch [Cellular Data Network]



    • iPhone: Check the website of your carrier to find out the used [APN], [Username] and [Password] settings. Enter those in the "Internet Tethering" section.
      Touch the [Network] button.



    • iPhone: Touch [Internet Tethering]



    • iPhone: Switch [Internet Tethering] ON



    • iPhone: Ensure that this window remains open during the setup with the Notebook, otherwise the iPhone cannot be found via Bluetooth.




  3. Setup Internet connection (Notebook)

    • PC: Ensure that Bluetooth is up and running. You should see a Bluetooth icon in the system tray. If not, then modify it as shown in the following picture.





    • PC: Right mouse click on the Bluetooth system tray icon and select [Add New Connection].



    • PC: Select your iPhone from the list and click [Next]



    • PC: Double click on your iPhone network icon to connect it.



    • PC: Allow the iPhone to connect. Click [Yes]




      ...or...

      PC: Enter a PIN manually if required. It can be any PIN you like (e.g. 711135)
      Click [OK]



    • iPhone: Touch [Pair] to pair the iPhone with the notebook. 




      ...or...

      iPhone: Enter same PIN again (e.g. 711135)
      Click [Connect]



    • PC: Click [Allow access] if a firewall window pops up.



    • PC: Click on the suitable Network Location e.g. [Public network]



    • PC: Click [Close]



    • PC: Launch your Webbbrowser (e.g. Internet Explorer)



    • PC: Now you should be able to browse the internet.



    • iPhone: The headline "Internet Tethering" indicates that it is enabled.



    • PC: Right mouse click on the Bluetooth system tray icon and select
      [Disconnect] in order to end the internet connection.



    • PC: Confirm disconnection warning with [Yes]



    • PC: The Bluetooth connection to the iPhone is disconnected now.



    • iPhone: The headline "Internet Tethering" disappears
