    Issue:

If you try to install your operating system with the bundled Windows XP media (e.g. GMR400816GR0 [H08036GR] or GMR400816EN [H08085EN]) you may receive an error message: "ERROR: Setenv file D:\Setenv.ini or X:\tools\Setenv.ini not found!"

    Summary:

To prevent this issue please switch the "SATA Controller Mode" in the BIOS temporarily to "Compatibility" for the recovery process.

    Resolution:

If you try to install your operating system with the bundled Windows XP media you may receive an error message:

"ERROR: Setenv file D:\Setenv.ini or X:\tools\Setenv.ini not found!"

The reason for this is that an appropriate AHCI driver is missing in the used Windows PE Recovery Medium. Therefore no drive letter for the optical disc drive could be assigned.
This leads at the end to an error message: 'ERROR: Setenv file D:\Setenv.ini or X:\tools\Setenv.ini not found!'

To prevent this issue please switch the 'SATA Controller Mode' in the BIOS temporarily to 'Compatibility' for the recovery process:

  1. When booting the machine press "ESC" followed by "F1" to enter the BIOS setup.
  2. Navigate to the second BIOS page with the "PGDN" key and change the "SATA Controller Mode" and set it to "Compatibility". The default value is "AHCI".

  3. Press "END" key followed by "Y" (on a German keyboard it will be the "Z"-key) to save the changes and exit BIOS setup.
    Your notbook will automatically reboot.

  4. At the following boot, press and hold the "C" key to directly boot from your "Windows XP Recovery DVD".
  5. Follow the steps on the screen to install Windows XP Professional on your machine.

  6. When the Recovery process has been finished, you will be asked to remove the Recovery Medium.

  7. After that, please press "OK" and "Exit". This will end the Recovery procedure and the machine will shut down.
  8. After pressing the power button, please press "ESC" followed by "F1" to enter the BIOS setup again.
  9. Navigate to the second BIOS page with the "PGDN" key and change back the "SATA Controller Mode" to "AHCI".

  10. Press "END" key followed by "Y" (on a German keyboard it will be the "Z"-key) to save the changes and exit BIOS setup.

  11. After the automatic reboot, the machine will boot Windows XP and continues to setup the operating system for first usage.
