    Issue:

On a few occasions, fan activity felt to be disturbing and in tablet or clamshell mode, a reduced CPU frequency might be noticed, which result in a drop in performance.

    Summary:

Basically, reducing fan activity leads to lower performance. To avoid this behavior, improved thermal control has been implemented which strengthen power at power saving mode. In addition CPU frequency reduction (throttling) could be minimized, enhancing overall performance of the Portégé X20W-D when used in tablet or clamshell mode.

Please follow the changes described in the resolution section, to apply a new thermal control table and reducing CPU throttling in tablet or clamshell mode.



    Resolution:

  1. Apply at least BIOS version 3.20 (EC/KBC 2.00). Download available via our driver download portal.
  2. Restart the unit and access the BIOS by pressing F2 key. Check if BIOS V3.20 (EC/KBC 2.00) has been successfully applied:



  3. Next, select Power Management on the left side in the BIOS setup. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and enter BIOS Power Management:



  4. Make sure to select the following values:

     Thermal Control Alternative Mode:  Enabled
     Battery Save Mode:  User Setting
     Processing Speed:  High
     CPU Sleep Mode:  Enabled (no change)
     Cooling Method:  Power Saver




  5. Save the settings by pressing the "F10" key.
  6. Within Windows 10, right click on the battery icon in the taskbar and select "Power Options":



  7. Next, click on "Change plan settings" on the power plan you are using:



  8. Select "Change advanced power settings". A second window showing the advanced power options will pop up. Expand "TOSHIBA Power Saver Settings" and select for both, "On battery" and "Plugged in" option "Power saver". Click "OK" to apply the settings. 



  9. Reboot the operating system once again to make sure, all changes have been successfully applied. As of now, a reduced fan activity and minimized CPU frequency throttling take place.
    If no improvement can be observed, please check again if all steps have been correctly adopted and for example, no high load of the system causing a necessary cooling of the unit.
