With the fingerprint software TrueSuite Access Manager from AuthenTec it is possible to protect / unprotect files.
All information in this document are verified with the AuthenTec software version V2.5.29.0.
Note: For all data, a backup should be done on an external device or media. If files are protected on the notebook then an unprotected backup should exist on an external device, e.g. external USB HDD or media on a safe place (e.g. at home), that due to a hardware defect or the notebook was stolen, the data is still available. |
To use the file protection feature, you have to set an windows password.

To protect a file, right-click on the file and choose "File Protection" from the menu.
If the user data file of the fingerprint software is not backuped before, a message appears, which informs you, to backup your personal user data file.
|
Note: It's recommended to export the fingerprint data to an external location (e.g. network drive or external hdd drive). If the fingerprints are not exported, a hardware change of the fingerprint device or recovery of the hdd the protected files could lead to not being able to unprotect files anymore. Toshiba has no tool to decrypt files if the fingerprints are lost! |
- To export the fingerprints, press the "Goto Export" button, if the window from above appears, or click on "Import / Export" -> Select "Export" -> "OK" in the TrueSuite Access Manager Fingerprint Software
- Select the location, you want to store your backup files to and a password to protect it, when the following window appars.
Click "Ok" to proceed.

- Click "Start" in the next window, to export the fingerprints to your backup file.

- After the export is finished, the following window appears:

- A protected file has a "lock sign" on it.

What must be done to get access to the protected files, if the fingerprint hardware was replaced for some reason?
The fingerprints are stored in the fingerprint device itself.
- Start the "TrueSuite Access Manager Fingerprint Software".
- Enter your "Windows User password"
- Click on the "Import / Export" button.

Click on "OK"
- Choose the fingerprint backup file (*.fpbak)
And enter the password for the backup file.
Click on "OK"
- The fingerprint will be imported.

Then it is possible to get access to the protected files which are created before the hardware replacement.
What must be done to get access to the protected files...
- if the HDD was recovered for some reasons?
- if the fingerprint hardware was replaced and the HDD was recovered for some reasons?
If the protected files are on the drive C: on the HDD, then these files are lost, because during the recovery process, drive C: will be overwritten.
If the protected files are on an external drive, then there is a chance to get access to these files.
Important: During the recovery process a new Windows User will be created. This user has to be the same as the user name on which the fingerprints were exported, or after the recovery process, a new Windows User will be created with the same name as the fingerprints were exported. If the new Windows user name is different to the user name with the exported fingerprints, then the files can not get unprotected. |
The fingerprints are stored in the fingerprint device and will not be deleted by the recovery process. After the recovery process the fingerprints are still there.
(If the new Windows User name is written exactly as the user name, the fingerprints have been exported with.)
The log on process will work, but file unprotecting will not work.
The following steps should be done to get access to the protected files:
- Start the "TrueSuite Access Manager Fingerprint Software".
- Enter the Windows password.
- Click on the "Import / Export" button.
- Select "Import"
- Choose the fingerprint backup file (*.fpbak)
- Enter the password for the backup file.
- The fingerprints will be imported.
- Now it is possible to get access to the protected files which are created before the hardware replacement.
