How to recover a Toshiba notebook or tablet device with the HDD recovery procedure

The following guide describes how to recover a Toshiba notebook with a preinstalled Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating system from HDD using the "HDD recovery procedure".

There are different Recovery Wizards (Toshiba HDD Recovery tool, Toshiba Recovery Wizard and the Windows 8 / 8.1 recovery solution) as described below.

Please note:
First of all make sure you already back up your important data!

Always create the recovery media (USB flash drive recommend) with the Toshiba Recovery Media Creator to avoid the loss of a emergency recovery solution in case of a HDD defect.




TOSHIBA HDD Recovery Tool

Windows Vista

Step 1 - "Initiating the HDD recovery procedure"

  1. Switch on the computer and press "F8" key while the Toshiba logo appears. You will see the following screen. 

    Choose the entry "Repair your Computer" and press "Enter":

  2. Wait until the following screen appears, choose the keyboard layout which matches the language of your keyboard and click on "Next".
    If unsure, just click on "Next".

  3. In the following screen a window with your username appears.
    Type your windows password as you would log on to your account and press "OK":

  4. The next screen offers several options to repair or diagnose your computer system.

    To start the recovery, click on "Toshiba HDD Recovery":


Step 2 - Performing the HDD recovery

  1. After passing the previous screen, you will be asked if a backup of your important data is already made.

    You can continue with the recovery process by clicking on "Next"

  2. Confirm the following screen also by clicking on "Next"

  3. You will be asked again if you want to recover your computer (and delete all files on your hard drive).

    There are no additional options regarding the hard drive, which can be set. Click on "Yes" to start the recovery.

  4. The recovery procedure starts immediately by formatting the hard drive and copying all needed files to the hard disk.

  5. By pressing the "Restart" button to restart the machine, the recovery procedure is almost finished.


Step 3 - Finishing the recovery process

1. After the successful completion of the recovery process and a restart of your computer, the following screen should appear.



Windows 7

Step 1 - "Initiating the HDD recovery procedure"

1. Switch on the computer, press and hold the "F12" key while the Toshiba logo appears. You will see the following screen.
Alternative you can press and hold the "0" key to access the recovery option.

 2. Choose "HDD Recovery" and confirm by selecting "Yes" to enter the system recovery.

 3. Choose your desired language and click "Next".

 4. The following warning message appear. If you proceed, all data on the HDD will be deleted and the system will be restored to factory defaults. Please click "Yes" to proceed:

 5. Please select "Recovery of Factory Default Software" and click "Next".


6. If you want to recover the device with the original factory settings, choose "Recovery to out-of-box-state" and click "Next"
If you want to set up your partitions with different settings, choose one of the other options. 

 7. Attention! At this point when you click "Next" all existing data on the HDD is lost, and the recovery procedure start.
If you want to proceed, select "Next".

 8. Please wait until the files have been copied to the hard disk.

 9. The recovery process has been completed. Press "Finish" to restart the computer.


Windows 8 / Windows 8.1

 1. Switch on the computer, press and hold the "F12" key while the Toshiba logo appears. You will see the following screen.
Alternative you can press and hold the "0" key to access the recovery option.

  2. Choose "HDD Recovery" and confirm by selecting "Yes" that you want to enter the system recovery.

 3. Select the option "Troubleshoot".

 4. Now there are 2 options available for recovery.

  • "Refresh your PC" - the system will be set to factory defaults but your personal files will not be touched.
  • "Reset your PC" - completly remove all files and applications and set the device back to factory defaults.
    This is the prefered option for a clean fatory recovery procedure.

 5. For a correct and clean factory recovery, choose "Reset your PC" and proceed with "Next".

 6. Again there are two options available for the factory reset.

"Just remove my files" - This is the fast option if you want to keep your PC system.

"Fully clean the drive" is a more secure option, it takes several hours for the recovery procedure.

 7. No matter which option is choosen, the below window appears. To start the recovery procedure choose "Reset".

Depending on the selected option the recovery procedure can take up to a few hours to finish.


Toshiba Windows 8 tablet devices

If you want to access the boot menu on Toshiba Windows 8 / 8.1 tablet devices and you don't have a keyboard attached please press and hold the "Vol+" button and turn on the device.
After a few seconds the boot option menu will appear. Select "HDD Recovery" and the rest of the procedure is similar to the Windows 8 recovery process.
